There are some strings in Twenty Ten 1.3-alpha .pot which purpose is unclear to me, since they don’t seem to be used anywhere. They are commented as follows:
- Theme Name of the plugin/theme
- Description of the plugin/theme
- Author of the plugin/theme
- Tags of the plugin/theme
Import plugins in GlotPress have this kind of strings too. Is this a groundwork for translatable descriptions in the future? Are they intended for translation? Am I missing something?

When gettext tools are used for generation of POT file for plugin/theme, they also put those information from header. If translated, you will see those translations at WP’s admin.

I’ve translated these strings, however they are still displayed in English on Manage Themes page both in WordPress 3.0.1 and 3.1 Beta 1, because current_theme_info() uses the data directly from style.css, without calling any of the l10n functions. So I still wonder what is the purpose of their presence in the .pot file.

Yes, I reported this problem several months ago – http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/14063

Thanks for the link. I completely forgot about that ticket and was going to create a new one.
