Hi guys,
All of us here belong to the WordPress translating community and many know how frustrating the translating process is. WordPress has more than 3,300 strings (+500 for MultiSite), it’s just too much.I think that the translators community has to be more involved in the development process to reduce the strings ammount and improve it’s quality. WordPress trac already have a few interesting ideas like:
- Consolidate string with same meaning but different wording (http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/14039)
- Merge similar string (http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/18218)
- Replace/Remove html code entities (http://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/7098#comment:10)
I would like to hear more ideas, based on your experience, how do you think we can improve the translating process and/or reduce the strings ammount? (you can add your trac tickets)
-
Stas Sușcov
What you are asking is fair, though you should also keep in mind, that updating older strings, will require new forces to review localizations too. While some teams represent actually one man contributions, this might be an issue.
-
Rami
Stas, when merging similar string, for example, we delete the old strings without creating new strings because both already have translation. If you check the trac ticket i created (#18218) you will find more that 50 of those strings, i need your help to find more similar strings.
-
Rami
when i say delete, i mean delete from glotpress.

+1 on this task, would be nice to put all these ticket ready fro 3.2.X release but not more than 3.3… more we wait more risk there is to have other inconsistencies
-
Rami
I prefer 3.2.2
-
Peter Westwood
These are tasks for the major release cycle not the maintenance release cycle so a 3.3 target is more appropriate.
However we should focus on incremental improvements rather than a large review an update of every single string as that just causes unecessary code churn.

Currently, WP_I18N strings do not seem to be properly replaced by the package build system in the following files:
/wp-includes/functions.php
/wp-includes/ms-load.php
/wp-includes/ms-settings.phpCould anyone please look into it?
-
tenpura
This problem is seen in several (all?) languages, for example:
http://ja.wordpress.org/builds/ja/trunk/wordpress-3.2-rc1-ja.zip
http://id.wordpress.org/wordpress-3.2-RC1-id_ID.zip
http://sv.wordpress.org/wordpress-3.2-RC1-sv_SE.zip/wp-includes/functions.php seems to be excluded by 50K limit fix (http://i18n.trac.wordpress.org/changeset/17026), because it is bigger than 50K.
For /wp-includes/ms-load.php and /wp-includes/ms-settings.php, a corresponding ms-xx.mo may not be loaded properly.
(Since I don’t know how the package system is deployed, these are my guess.) -
Nikolay Bachiyski
Strings in functions.php should be OK now.
I am looking into the other problem.
-
Nikolay Bachiyski
Not gettexted strings are now being replaced in ms-* files, too.

Thank you so much, it works fine now!

Hi there!
I’d like to be a validator in bbPress project for pt_BR. User: Dianakc
By the way, bbPress will have a multilingual documentation?!

DjZoNe
Hi Zé, please remove from the validators everybody for the Hungarian language project except me (DjZoNe) and fgyw, thus the others does not show any kind of activity since years.
So, I don’t think it would be fair, to show their names in the Credits pages.-

DjZoNe
It took 24 hours to show up, on the Credits page, right?
-
Zé
Not sure how long, exactly, but the info is cached, yes.
-
DjZoNe
3 days passed, and they still show up, on the Credits page? What else can be done about this?

Same Problem in ar-AR
There are inactive validators since 4-5 years.
It is ridiculous and unfair to show in the same line names of people who contributed to wordpress several hours with names of others who are contributing and working hard and constantly since many years.
Please remove all validators from ar-AR except me. I will give you later the nickname of my Translation partner.

Ruben Woudsma
I was looking into the Android translation as @jonezjea requested this. I would like to approve some suggestions and change some translations to make them inline with the WordPress.org translation.
As I am one of the moderators of the nl_NL translation of WordPress I thought I already had moderation rights on the specific translation. Apparently that is not the case. Can I get commit access so I can approve the Android suggestions and make some modification to the iPhone translation so the translations will be in sync.
-
Ruben Woudsma
I mean validation rights. And could you also add (besides me = rubenw) defries and afoka to that group.
-
Zé
Permissions are per-project, not per-language, but I’ve added the above users as validators of WordPress for Android
-
-
Jenia
@woudsma: I just checked and noticed that the Dutch Android translations are still unapproved, maybe you’ve forgotten about them

So here is a friendly reminder and a link:

This really isn’t the proper place for this question. You should try the Dutch WordPress forum: http://nl.forums.wordpress.org
This site is meant for the various translation teams, not individual translation issue of themes not properly being translated
